Safety fears for children entering derelict Telford flats
Safety concerns have been raised after children were spotted entering an abandoned block of flats in Telford.
Residents living around Turreff Avenue, Donnington, Telford, say youngsters have been going through the gates blocking off the building, which has been empty for more than a year, and going inside.
West Mercia Police say officers have received reports of people entering the site and turning on taps, which has caused some damage, and are still investigating.
Sharon Bradburn, who lives nearby, said:
"I've said the flats need to be made safe as a priority. The fence is weak and doors and windows are open. The flats have never been lived in, just left to be vandalised over and over again.
"My overall concern is the safety of children in the area. With still a good three weeks of the school holidays left, its vital every single property is made safe, otherwise I'm worried there will be a child badly injured or a fatality."
Ms Bradburn said she has now contacted councillors in the hope of getting in contact with the owner about the dangers of the site.
Police spokesman Paul Roberts said officers were called following concerns for the safety of a group of youths in a derelict building in the Turreff Avenue area about 2.20pm on Sunday.
He said: "Officers attended and found a number of taps had been turned on causing damage to the property."
Anyone who saw suspicious activity is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 417s of August 14.
