Elderly man fighting for his life after three-vehicle crash on A5
An elderly man was today fighting for his life following a three-vehicle crash on a stretch of the A5 near Llangollen.
Three patients were taken to hospital following the crash, which happened at about 6.50pm on Thursday, on the A5 between the Halton Roundabout and Ruabon.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and the Wales Ambulance Service confirmed one of the injured motorists was an elderly man who was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital in a "critical condition".
Today North Wales Police describe the man's condition as "life threatening".
The collision resulted in the road having to be closed in both directions for about six hours.
Firefighters also had to cut one person free from one of the vehicles.
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at about 7pm on Thursday, October 13, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A483 near Halton.
"We attended with colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service and a search and rescue helicopter, three emergency ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance officer attended the scene.
"Three patients were taken to hospital in total.
"An elderly man was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital in a critical condition, an adult woman was taken by road to Wrexham Maelor Hospital in a stable condition, another adult woman was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by West Midlands Ambulance Service also in a stable condition."
Sergeant Raymond Williams from North Wales Police's Roads Policing Unit said: "We are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the collision to contact us."
