1,000 tonnes of hay burn in three fires near Shrewsbury

Around 1,000 tonnes of hay have been burning in three fires which started in the early hours near Shrewsbury.

Firefighters have already been tackling the flames for more than six hours and crews are expecting to remain on the scene for most of the day.

Three separate fires were started in two nearby fields in Uffington, around two miles away from Shrewsbury town centre.

Five fire engines from Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth and Tweedale were sent to the fields at around 4.20am, where approximately 1,000 tonnes of hay were alight.

Shrewsbury Fire Station tweeted several pictures of the blazes, including one of all three with the caption "Red sky in the morning!"

Firefighters advised people to avoid the area where possible.
