The two-car smash happened just before 7am on the A518 Newport to Stafford road, about half a mile from Newport and close to the Stafford Roundabout junction with the A41.

Two ambulances were sent to the scene along with a paramedic area support officer and the aircrew from the Midlands Air Ambulance at Cosford, including a trauma doctor, who responded in a car.

Police officers and fire crews were also in attendance.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "On arrival, crews found two cars that had suffered significant damage.

"Other motorists were attempting CPR on the driver of one car.

"Ambulance staff took over and carried out advanced life support on the middle aged man, but sadly his injuries were too severe and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"The 43-year-old man driving the other car had managed to get out before ambulance crews arrived.

"He was treated for fractures to his right collar bone and left thumb. He was taken by ambulance to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital."

The crash left the road blocked, with police urging motorists to avoid the area.

In a separate incident, the road was partially blocked on the A41 at Hatton Road between Hinstock and Ternhill.
