Police in the town had been raising awareness about firework safety and the laws surrounding their use in the run-up to bonfire night.

Emergency services decided to base their bonfire night headquarters at Harlescott Community Centre this year after ongoing anti-social behaviour problems in the Kynaston Road area.

Council bosses said fly-tipping was a common issue in the lead up to bonfire night and on the night itself, partner agencies hosted a range of activities in the community centre to engage with local residents before basing their headquarters there later on.

Earlier on a tree was set on fire in Shrewsbury after being hit by a firework.

Firefighters were called to Kingfisher Close in Sundorne Grove at about 7.50pm.
