Burning toilet roll thrown around Newport street during late night party

Young people threw burning toilet rolls around a town's high street during late night partying, it has been claimed.

It isn't the first time that the "prank" has been spotted in Newport, with Councillor Eric Carter warning that it could lead to serious consequences for those involved.

A fire engine was sent from Newport to The Square in High Street late on Monday to reports of youths setting fire to toilet rolls.

When they arrived shortly after 11.50pm, the rolls were out and they left about 10 minutes later.

Councillor Carter said: "Someone must think this is funny, but I think it's extremely unfunny.

"Over the last few Mondays I've found toilet rolls left in the footpath, and I've had to pick them up and put them in the bin.

"I've heard other people talking about it as well.

"It's a very irresponsible thing to do.

"Why would anyone in their right mind want to do it?

"There are repeat performances here, and it may be the same people doing it again.

"If anyone sees anything, call 101 immediately.

"It's difficult and the police have other things going on, but it's well known that there's an ongoing problem on a Monday evening.

"People gather in their hundreds on a Monday to enjoy themselves.

"That's not to say they shouldn't enjoy themselves, but that doesn't involve setting fire to toilet rolls and potentially causing real damage.

"It's not funny, it's not clever and it's not acceptable, and it won't ever be acceptable."
