Poppy appeal charity box stolen as spate of collection thefts in Shrewsbury
Thieves have been stealing charity boxes in a spate of thefts across Shrewsbury.
According to police a number of boxes ranging from cancer charity boxes to Poppy Appeal tins have been swiped from shops, pubs and counters.
In the latest incident a 23-year-old man was arrested in Shrewsbury town centre on Tuesday night at around 5.45pm after a Clic Sergeant charity box was taken from the Shrewsbury Hotel in Mardol.
Staff at the popular pub apprehended the man and recovered the charity box before police arrived. He is currently in police custody.
A further box was taken from a Chinese takeaway on the outskirts of the town.
West Mercia Police say the thieves went into the Blue Jade Chinese takeaway on Welshpool Road, between 11am and 1pm on Tuesday.
They took the tin and made off with it. It is not known how much money was inside.
Sergeant Rebecca Thomas, from Shrewsbury Safer Neighbourhoods Team said: "We are aware there have been a number of charity boxes taken in the Shrewsbury area recently and enquiries are ongoing to establish if those incidents are linked to the theft at the Shrewsbury Hotel last night."
Officers are now appealing for information to track down the thieves.
