Shrewsbury river search continues into second day after reports of man in the water

A search of the River Severn in Shrewsbury is continuing this morning after reports of a man being seen in the water.

Police were called at around 4.40pm yesterday after sightings of an individual who was believed to be seen in the water near Chester Street.

Emergency services spent several hours last night scouring the riverbanks and the water around the Frankwell car park area.

The river search began last night and continues into this morning.

There were three fire engine pumps and a water rescue team on scene.

Police in Shrewsbury have now confirmed the search will continue this morning.

The @ShrewsburyCops twitter account has tweeted: "Report yesterday afternoon of a male being seen in the River Severn at Shrewsbury. Searches are resuming this morning with @severnrescue."

Speaking last night, one eye witness said they saw members of the emergency services searching the riverbank around Frankwell with torches.

Inspector Ben Hembrey of West Mercia Police said: "We are doing everything we can to bottom out the sighting."
