The major route linking Shrewsbury and Hereford was closed both ways as a result, between Ludlow and Leominster. It was reopened shortly after 3pm.

Woofferton resident Carrie Hughes said: "The accident was between a car and a Co-Op lorry.

"No-one is hurt luckily, however a diesel tank on the lorry has been damaged and is leaking all over the road."

A female casualty was taken to hospital by ambulance following the collision, but police confirmed her injuries were not believed to be serious.

Sam Cook, speaking for West Mercia Police shortly after the crash, said: "A collision between a car and a lorry at the junction of the A49 and A456, next to the Salwey Arms, has closed the road.

"Nobody was seriously injured but a fuel leak means that the road is likely to be closed for some time while a clean up takes place."
