Tributes paid to 'lovely' lady whose body was found in canal near Oswestry
Tributes have today been paid to a "lovely" lady whose body was found in a canal on the Shropshire border.
Neighbours today paid tribute to Mrs Thomas, 88, who had lived in the town for many years.
But neighbours said Mrs Thomas had lived on her own and was an independent lady.
Lyn and Judith Price said she went out for a walk to get her newspaper at about 9am each day but did not go any further.
"She went to the hairdresser once a week but that was it. She was very independent," Mr Price said. "She had lived in the house since it was built.
"She was a really lovely lady, who was very independent."
A family member was yesterday too upset to speak.
Police, who were alerted to the tragedy at noon on Sunday, said the death was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.
A spokesman said inquiries to determine what had happened were continuing and appealed for anyone with information to come forward
A file is being prepared for the Shropshire coroner.
A statement from West Mercia Police said: "At the moment, the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious."
"Police are carrying out enquiries to establish how she came to be in the canal."
Anyone with information should call 101 and quote incident 448s.
