Broseley house fire: Investigations ongoing after man and dog die

Investigations were ongoing today into the cause of a house fire in Shropshire in which an elderly man and a dog died.

At the address today, a police officer was guarding the property and another bunch of flowers had been left there.

West Mercia Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are investigating how the fire started.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service today said the investigation could take up to a week.

The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

The fire was discovered by neighbours at around 4pm on Saturday, who called 999.

Fire chiefs said the blaze involved the kitchen, conservatory and utility of the property.

West Mercia Police spokesman Daniel Butler said: "On Saturday, January 14 West Mercia Police received reports of a fire at a property on Benthall lane in Broseley.

"West Mercia Police, in conjunction with Shropshire Fire Service arrived at the property and upon attendance found a fully developed fire on the ground floor of a property.

"Sadly an 83-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. A dog also died in the fire.

"West Mercia Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are conducting a joint investigation on how the fire started however at this time we are not treating the fire as suspicious

"The man's next of kin has been informed and enquiries are on-going."
