Man suffers 'life threatening' injuries after being hit by a train at Shrewsbury level crossing

A man has been taken to hospital with  life threatening injuries after being hit by a train at a level crossing in Shrewsbury.

The incident happened in Harlescott in Shrewsbury at about 5.30am this morning.

Trains between Crewe and Shrewsbury were cancelled, diverted, or delayed up to 60 minutes, until about 7.30am.

The roads near the level crossing in Harlescott were also closed.

A statement on behalf of British Transport Police said: "Officers attended the scene alongside paramedics.

"A male has been taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Jamie Arrowsmith, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a train near to Harlescott Crossing in Shrewsbury just after 5.30am this morning.

"Two ambulances, a paramedic area support officer, a rapid response paramedic and a MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the scene.

"Crews treated a man for a number of serious injuries, including to his head and pelvis, following a collision with a train.

"In order to stabilise his condition the man was anaesthetised at the scene before being transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital."
