Trains between Shrewsbury and Cardiff were disrupted after a lorry crashed in to a house and ended up blocking a level crossing.

Arriva Trains Wales warned of delays of up to an hour for rail passengers as buses were been put in place to complete journeys between Shrewsbury and south Wales. Trains going on to Crewe and Chester from Shrewsbury were also affected, although services were resuming this afternoon.

The accident happened at about 5.50am on the outskirts of Leominster.

Twitter user @EspeciallyDerek tweeted:

The lorry, carrying 28 tonnes of grain, tipped off the edge of the road on a bend next to the crossing at Mill Street, and ended up lodged at an angle, leaning on a house at the crossing.

The house is damaged but inspections are still going on to see how bad the situation is, Martin Lown from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said.

"We've got a structural engineer on site and as the recovery continues we will monitor the situation," he said.

The nearby A44 was likely to be closed all day he said.

No-one was injured in the crash.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "Due to a road traffic collision at the level crossing in Leominster earlier this morning, the railway between Hereford and Shrewsbury will be closed until later today.

"Working with our partners, Arriva Trains, Wales there will be a rail replacement bus service in operation between Hereford and Shrewsbury.

"We are working hard to re-open the line and return services to normal as quickly as possible."

Travellers are also able to use their tickets on Cross Country, London Midland, Virgin Trains and Great Western Railway.
