Inspector will visit planned route for £13 million power cable

A three-week public inquiry into controversial plans for a £13 million power cable on the Shropshire border will come to an end on Wednesday when a planning inspector visits the proposed route of the line.

The inquiry at the Lion Quays Hotel, near Oswestry, is looking at which route SP Manweb should use for the line which the power firm says is needed to ensure supply to 85,000 customers.

The 13-mile power line will run from Legacy substation, near Wrexham, to Oswestry substation.

Closing submissions will be made at the inquiry tomorrow by SP Manweb bosses who say their preferred route has been chosen because it impacts as little as possible on the landscape.

Closing submissions will also be given Wrexham County Borough Council which wants the cable to run underground because of fears an overhead line would damage countryside and the tourism industry.

Site visits will be held on Wednesday before the inspector Mr Emyr Jones considers his decision.

Councils on both sides of the border have voiced concerns about the plans at the inquiry, including Oswestry Town Council, Chirk Town Council and St Martins Parish Council.
