Cardboard waste collection to return
More than 130,000 homes across Shropshire are to get their kerbside cardboard collection reinstated next year, the leader of Shropshire Council revealed today.
The recycling collections were axed in October 2011, resulting in more than 1,000 people signing a petition calling for their return.
But with waste contractor Veolia due to introduce a new fleet of collection vehicles from next year that will allow cardboard to be stored separately, kerbside collections are due to come back.
The reintroduction of the service had been promised by the Tory group as part of their campaign in the recent local elections. Following the party sweeping back to power, council leader Keith Barrow said the reinstatement would 'be happening'.
"The only reason we couldn't do it sooner is because in the contract it says vehicles will be replaced at a certain point," he said. "In 2014, they start changing the vehicles."
