Street fun to return to Shrewsbury after washout
They might have been hit by the weather – but town centre games for youngsters will be returning this weekend.
Shrewsbury hosted Urban Canvas, a group which creates elaborate artwork based games for children on the street, last Saturday. Setting up in Shrewsbury’s square the group had planned some stylised hopscotch antics, but the wet weather saw their artistic efforts washed away as quickly as they could sketch them.
However, the group will be returning with more activities from around noon until 4pm at The Square this Saturday. Catherine McMahon, of Urban Canvas, said it had been a frustrating day but they were eager to return. Saturday saw a succession of torrential downpours, putting paid to the efforts to provide some street-based entertainment.
Ms McMahon said: “We got there about 8am and had about five or six designs planned. It was going really well until the heavens opened and then it was a game of two halves so to speak.”
It takes a couple of hours to paint out the designs, which meant despite a second effort the chances were thwarted by the weather. Ms McMahon said they were looking forward to returning this weekend – with conditions expected to be more friendly.
She said: “We are coming back next weekend and hopefully the weather will be much finer.
“We will be doing a floor-art piece next week where people can engage and help us do it on the ground.”
