Cold and foggy weather set to continue across Shropshire into the new year

The Met Office forecast for the West Midlands over the next two days says it will remain cloudy and murky overnight with fog and hill fog reforming, patchy drizzle and generally mild weather. Saturday is due to be another grey and dull day for most with fog and drizzle at times, especially over the hills.

In Shropshire a maximum temperature tonight (Friday) of five degrees is expected, with a maximum temperature of eight degrees forecast tomorrow.

The West Midlands generally has seen freezing fog and low temperatures over the last few days, though it hasn't stopped people embarking on festive walks - or even taking part in the freezing annual Boxing Day Chasewater dip.

But the Met Office says the transition period between 2024 and 2025 for the region looks distinctly unsettled with high pressure, which has brought low cloud and fog, set to continue.

Issuing a national update, chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said:  “From Sunday we will start to see some heavy rain affecting northwestern parts of Scotland. 

"After a brief respite, further rain and strong winds will be in place on Monday and Tuesday across Scotland, as another area of low pressure approaches. This may be accompanied by some heavy snowfall in the mountains and perhaps to lower elevations.”

"From New Year’s Day the unsettled conditions, and potentially disruptive wind, rain and snow, could affect more southern parts of the UK.

"Wintry showers are likely to be a feature of the forecast as a cold northerly flow becomes established in the latter part of the week."
