1,000-cow mega dairy gets the go-ahead

A 1,000-cow mega dairy will be built near Welshpool after an appeal by an animal welfare charity was thrown out.

Farmer Fraser Jones will get to build the dairy at his Lower Leighton Farm, Leighton, following three years of legal wrangling.

Judge Gary Hickenbottom announced at Welshpool Magistrates Court today that an appeal by the World Society for the Protection of Animals had been dismissed.

Mr Jones had originally been granted permission to build the farm earlier this year by Welsh Assembly planning minister Carl Sargeant following a public inquiry in April 2013.

But WSPA appealed, saying the economic benefits the dairy would bring would not outweigh the detrimental impact the dairy would have on the area's landscape.
