Geoffrey Timmis, 82, had got out of his Land Rover to open a gate on land at Home Farm, The Incline, Lilleshall, Newport, on July 25, but had failed to apply the handbrake properly.

An inquest into his death at Shirehall on Tuesday, heard that he died in hospital of his injuries, almost three months after the accident.

Coroner for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, John Ellery, concluded that Mr Timmis died as a result of a road traffic collision.

When the incident happened, Mr Timmis was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

He was then transferred to the Princess Royal Hospital, and on to Whitchurch Community Hospital where his conditioned deteriorated and he died on October 16.

Dr Cambeen of the hospital, said in a report that Mr Timmis had suffered a fractured tibia and fibula, a fractured vertebrae, and fractured ribs and stated he died from his injuries.

Mr Ellery said there were no witnesses to the incident, and Mr Timmis had been going across to another part of the farm where his son was moving machinery.

He read a report from Dr Robert Moss, of the Midland Air Ambulance Service, who attended the scene in a field on Field Aston Lane.

A call was received at 10.18am, and on arrival paramedics found Mr Timmis with his left leg trapped under the tyre of the vehicle.

He had told paramedics the car had rolled back over him when he got out to open a gate, and he had been trapped for 20 minutes.

Fire crews were called to the scene, and they managed to lift the vehicle and free Mr Timmis' leg.

Mr Ellery read out an investigation report, which said it was conceivable Mr Timmis had not applied brake, and the vehicle had rolled back.

Mr Ellery concluded: "He had stopped and failed to put the handbrake on, the vehicle rolled backwards, trapping him underneath.

"On that evidence I record a conclusion of a road traffic collision."
