I must confess between now and the middle of March is my favourite time of year, not just because of the Six Nations! It is the best time of year to start to plan what we are going to do in terms of spring work.

Starting with a tissue test, the days of apply and hope are now behind us. Let’s see what is in the plant and the soil. Quite often in this part of the world we will see a high magnesium content. This is a historical issue caused by Llynclys lime.

The effect of this on today’s soil is a lock up of phosphorus. This is easily sorted this time of year. A Calphite in Wheat or Phosphorus Liberator at Maize Pre Emergence will see an increased availability of phosphorus in the soil. In early spring this will enhance the plant growth as phosphorus is the major growth nutrient.

Back to the Six Nations briefly – isn’t it amazing how 23 Scotsmen can bring so much joy to a lockdown Saturday afternoon?
