Telford's SMI aims to help farmers to avoid the big freeze this winter
Thermal insulation specialist Seymour Manufacturing International (SMI) has launched a new product range to help keep farm vehicles running in sub-zero temperatures.
The Telford-based company has designed a range of covers to protect containers which store diesel exhaust fluid, also known as AdBlue, from the ravages of winter.
The liquid is used to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines which are widely used in the agricultural sector, ensuring they comply with environmental regulations.
But AdBlue will start to crystallise or freeze when temperatures plummet.
SMI’s range of covers, using its award-winning Tempro® thermal insulation, prevents the AdBlue from freezing, saving farmers time, inconvenience and money.
“As soon as temperatures start to fall below 0°C, the fluid will start to freeze, and this can clog machinery and prevent farm vehicles from starting,” said SMI managing director Jill Seymour.
“Worse still, if crystallised AdBlue is allowed to enter an engine, it can cause extensive damage and even failure – potentially costing tens of thousands of pounds in repair bills and lost business.”
Research by European transport and crane association ESTA reveals rising reports of engine faults in the heavy transport sectors caused by use of AdBlue which is not in ideal condition. Officials describe it as ‘a serious issue with considerable safety implications.
Tempro®, SMI’s innovative lightweight thermal insulation material, has been scientifically proven by UK based testing centres to reduce energy loss by up to 60 per cent.
It is used across a wide range of sectors, from supermarket cold rooms to food transport fleets, NHS blood banks, military and chemical facilities.
Tempro® was also the first choice for intrepid explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes during his expedition to the South Pole, where he relied on it to safeguard his living quarters, tractor units, and portable laboratories from the extreme temperatures.
