Freshly calved dairy cows, heifers and young stock will compete for the Bryan Challenor Cup, named after the legendary dairy farmer and businessman from Abergavenny who died aged 70 in 2016 after a brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

For the third year, sponsors and agricultural businesses will have trade stands around the livestock market for the showpiece show and sale. They will be joined this year by stallholders selling a range of Christmas gifts.

“The Christmas Dairy Show and Sale for the Bryan Challenor Cup is always the highlight of the annual sales at the market, with more sponsors, more cash prizes and a very high quality entry of cattle,” said Jonny Dymond, Halls’ senior auctioneer and Shrewsbury Auction Centre manager.

“We hope to have more than 70 freshly calved dairy cows competing for the cup this year, as we try to surpass the £3,150 top price achieved in November. It has been another successful year for the dairy section, with weekly entries and prices consistently ahead of 2023.

“Many dairy farmers travel past other markets to sell their cattle in Shrewsbury and we have again secured a number of quality herd dispersal sales this year.”

The dairy show judge will be David Meddins, of Churchstoke and sponsors are Worldwide Sires, HJ Lea Oakes, Livestock Supplies, Morris Corfield, NWF Agriculture, Shropshire Holstein Club, HJR Agri, Battlefield Machinery, Dinky’s Diner, Oakwood and Wynnstay.
