Shropshire Farming Talk: Talking helps when life gets tough
With continuing pressure on the industry, intensified by a harsh wet winter and short days, many farmers are struggling to see the way forward.
Shropshire Rural Support (SRS) and other farming support charities are seeing a rise in calls and are reaching out to those who need support.
Despite this, there are positive stories out there where a conversation and having a listening ear, can turn round someone’s life.
This is highlighted by Aled, a young sheep and beef farmer from the Shropshire Borders who Jo, SRS’s coordinator, visited in December.
Walking the farm together Aled talked about his struggle with mental health which started when studying veterinary science at university.
Over the years Aled experienced various interventions including a stay in hospital but says he is now in a great place, remotivated and in his own words “has his head screwed on”.
Aled has no doubt as to what helped his recovery and by sharing his experience hopes to help others suffering anxiety and depression.
Firstly, don’t be embarrassed about asking for help. Statistically one in four will experience depression during their lifetime, and this is believed to be far greater in the farming community.
Secondly, Aled says that talking has been core to his recovery and has had the greatest impact so it is important not to suffer in silence.
Shropshire Rural Support provides a confidential free service for Shropshire farmers, their families and those in the rural community.
The team of volunteers, all of whom are from farming backgrounds, are able to offer time and are trained to listen.
In addition to listening, the charity can provide guidance and signposting to professional advice on many aspects of farming, rural life and business.
The 24/7/365 free phone support line 0300 123 2825 ensures easy access to this essential confidential service. For those who prefer text messaging they can text SRS to 85258.
