Written by Philip Hume, the first volume looks at the area covered by Shropshire, north Herefordshire, Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Denbighshire and Flintshire.

Hume is secretary of the Mortimer History Society, the author of various local history books and articles, and a speaker on the Mortimers and the Marcher lordships.

The book describes the distinctive features and powers of the Marcher lordships, and how they evolved in the context of the significant events in Wales and the Marches that shaped their development between 1066 and 1282.

It also includes histories of each of the 20 Marcher lordships in the region, with a list of the lords and ladies who held them.

The 320-page book, which costs £15.99, was launched on March 5. Follow up books in the series will feature the Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire region, and Brecknockshire, Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire.
