A 28-year-old woman from Telford seriously injured when she was hit by a car as a child died as a result of the accident 18 years later, an inquest heard.

Allicia Dennis, of Canal Side, Trench, died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where she was a long-term patient, on November 10 last year.

An inquest in Wem yesterday heard she was hit by a car in Dawley Road, Wellington, on July 1, 1993.

Mr John Ellery, coroner for mid and north west Shropshire, said he had seen statements from relatives and a police officer who investigated the crash.

He said: "There was a collision between Allicia on foot and a motor car. There was no prosecution so there was no public hearing on how it occurred.

"Compensation was received so that would tell me some sort of civil process took place and the circumstances of the collision were investigated to enable the compensation to be obtained."

He went on: "Allicia was 28 years of age when she died at the RSH on November 10 last year."

The findings of a post-mortem said the cause of death was dehydration and sepsis, also known as blood poisoning, due to multiple necrotic pressure sores due to paraplegia following a road traffic collision.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Mr Ellery said: "I have enough evidence that the death was due to an accident. It all goes back to the collision."
