Jean Stead, from Lawley, suffered complications after surgery for her cancer, and was shocked when her doctor told her it was because of her weight. She shed the pounds by following a Slimming World programme.

She has now become a consultant for the weight loss company herself.

She held her first meeting at her latest group at Telford College in Wellington last week.

She said: "I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and had to undergo a mastectomy, then I developed septicaemia and other complications.

"It was because I was obese – I weighted 15 stone and I was really shocked when my doctor used the word 'obese'. It was then I realised I had to do something about my weight."

Jean, 62, said she tried to lose weight by herself, but only started to drop the pounds when she signed up to a group with Slimming World.

"I managed to lose the first two stone in just six months," she said. "It was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and after losing that first two stone I decided to become a Slimming World consultant and help other people as well.

"I've lost another stone and a half in the last 18 months. I've started swimming and walking, and with the group we go walking up the Wrekin.

"I am overwhelmed at the amount of success we have had at the Horsehay group. In the past 18 months the members have lost an amazing 516 stone."
