The opening times of a minor injury unit at a county hospital have been cut by two hours a day, health chiefs have admitted.

The chiefs said the unit at Whitchurch Community Hospital has had its opening times 'temporarily revised'.

The service was open from 9am to 7pm, seven days a week but from tomorrow it will be open Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm, excluding bank holidays.

Maggie Bayley, director of nursing and quality at Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, said: "Whitchurch is the only community hospital in the county which uses nurses from the main hospital wards to staff the minor injury unit (MIU).

"Over the past few months we have seen patients admitted to the hospital wards who have had increasingly complex conditions and who are very frail. This has meant it is now very difficult to staff the MIU out of normal working hours as our nurses are needed on the wards."
