Staff sickness shuts Oswestry maternity unit

Services at Oswestry’s midwife-led unit were temporarily suspended last night.

Trust bosses said the suspension of services from 8pm until 8am was due to staff sickness and activity affecting the consultant-led unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

Women booked to give birth at the unit who went into labour were offered a birth at another unit, as well as access to a midwife if they needed support.

Sarah Jamieson, head of midwifery at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “Unfortunately, sickness which has been affecting the PRH over recent days is continuing and, as a result, we are temporarily suspending services at Oswestry MLU in order to redeploy staff to where they are most needed.”
