The woman gave birth to a girl at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but after developing complications was rushed to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford for emergency treatment.

The woman, who was in her 20s and lived in Shrewsbury, gave birth to a girl on December 3, at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

But after developing complications following the birth in the hospital’s maternity wing, the woman was rushed to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford for emergency treatment.

Despite the efforts of the medical staff there she died the same day.

It is understood that her pregnancy and the delivery of her baby had been normal and progressed well.

But it was in post-delivery that the condition of the 26-year-old suddenly deteriorated.

Bosses at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust have now called on independent experts to carry out an in-depth investigation in to her death. They have offered their sincere condolences to the family of the young woman, who has not been named.

Her partner will now bring up her young daughter with the help of family and friends.

The coroner’s office which covers Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, confirmed it had been informed of the death and a date for the inquest to open is still to be arranged.

Deirdre Fowler, director of nursing, midwifery and quality at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “We offer our deepest condolences to the family. Our thoughts and full support are with them at this very difficult time.

"A full investigation will be conducted by independent experts external to the trust and therefore it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”

The maternity unit at the hospital is currently closed, but this is unrelated to the death. Work is due to start next week to assess the damage caused when a roof collapsed in the snow. The unit is due to reopen at the end of January.
