Savannah sleeps soundly, unaware of the importance of her birth for mothers in Shropshire.

The little girl was the first baby to be born at one of Shropshire's three, midwife led units, since they re-opened at the turn of the year.

Her parents, Christie and Graeme Kros, from Ellesmere, who went to the MLU at the Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry for the birth, are urging others to chose the units for either labour or recuperation following a consultant unit labour.

"We were so grateful to be able to have Savannah in Oswestry," Christie said.

"The unit is so relaxing, it is not like a hospital at all and staying in for three days made us comfortable about taking Savannah home when the time came."

"We went in in the morning and when were were told it would be a while before the baby was born were were able to come home as it is only 10 minutes down the road. It we had driven to Telford I would have felt very uncomfortable about going home."

Graeme said having the maternity unit in Oswestry meant he and other family members did not face the long trek to Telford every day.

"Christie's sister and my sister-in-law had their babies in Oswestry, it is a very special place."

The couple said they are concerned about the future of the midwife led units.

"The staff are incredible but they don't have enough midwives. We were only able to stay in overnight on Saturday because one of the midwives volunteers to sleep at the unit overnight after doing a day shift."
