Contingency plans have been put in place for the PRH after the resignation of a consultant.

Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has been struggling to recruit doctors for its A&E departments, with health chiefs citing it as one of the main reasons for its desire to create one emergency centre at Shrewsbury as part of the Future Fit health review.

A BBC report said the trust should have around 20 doctors but is operating with just nine - and fewer than half of those working on call.

Neil Nisbet, deputy chief executive at SaTH, said: “One of our emergency department consultants recently announced his intention to leave the trust and we are now actively trying to recruit to this position.

"As we have previously discussed, however, it is vital that contingencies are put in place should the continued safe, effective and dignified running of these services become unsustainable and therefore we are reviewing our emergency department business continuity plan.”
