Bridgewater Surgery in Whitchurch will join with Ellesmere Medical Practice to form Churchmere.

Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group formally accepted the proposals at a meeting yesterday.

Dr Julian Povey, Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group’s clinical chair, said: "The proposed merger between Bridgewater Family and Ellesmere Medical Practices, both longstanding practices offering high quality patient centred care, has been approved at Shropshire CCG’s Primary Care Commissioning Committee.

"This positive decision means that the merged practice, called Churchmere Medical Group, will be more able to meet current and future challenges with secured GP services for the people of Whitchurch."

Bridgewater has also agreed to accept patients previously registered with Claypit Street Medical Practice on a permanent basis.

The GPs will officially merge on April 1.
