Shropshire care home confident standards will rise after critical report
A care company says it is “extremely disappointed” with the results of an inspection after one of its homes, near Market Drayton, was told it needed to improve in several areas.
Beech House Nursing Home in Wollerton was inspected at the end of last year by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), after a previous report in 2016.
The new report, published on March 7, judged the care home’s overall offering to be in the category “requires improvement”.
The report said: “Beech House Nursing Home provides nursing and personal care for up to 54 people. At the time of this inspection, 31 people were living there, some of whom were living with dementia.
“This is the second time the service has been rated 'requires improvement'.
“The provider had systems in place to monitor the quality of support given and to make changes when needed. However, these systems were ineffective and did not identify the concerns or improvements required we found at this inspection. This was a breach of the Health and Social Care Act 2008.”
Some of the complaints contained in the report included residents “not always safely supported with their medicines” and “not having sufficient opportunity to engage in activities that they found interesting and stimulating”.
It went on: “People were not always treated in a kind, caring and considerate manner by those supporting them. Although people generally thought there were enough staff to meet their needs they received an inconsistent response to requests for assistance. This included waiting for longer than expected periods of time for help.”
A spokesman for Springcare, the company that operates Beech House, said: “As a company we were extremely disappointed with the result of the recent CQC inspection at Beech House. We have taken several measures to ensure Beech House meets the CQC’s fundamental standards in providing safe, effective, responsive, caring and a well-led care provision.”
The spokesman said: “The wellbeing of individuals living at Beech House is our priority and the manager and staff are working hard to make sustained improvements to the quality of the service overall. We feel confident these positive improvements will be reflected on the next CQC inspection.”
