Suicide prevention campaign launched in Shropshire
Three organisations have joined forces in a Shropshire-wide campaign to help prevent suicide.
West Mercia Police along with the Accident and Emergency Department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Shropshire Mind will be working together to distribute 40,000 drinks mats and wallet cards which have been specially produced and which are being handed out at various locations around the county, including pubs and restaurants.
The launch is designed to coincide with the festive season, which is often a particularly difficult time for people living with mental ill health and social isolation. The campaign focuses on the message that there’s always someone to talk to, no matter how bad things seem.
The mats and cards provide three separate contact helpline numbers; Papyrus HopelineUK, which is a suicide prevention charity for people up to the age of 35, The Samaritans, who provide emotional support and the Mind Infoline, which can provide a range of mental health related support.
Clive Ireland, chair of Shropshire Mind, said: “We are delighted to be part of this suicide prevention campaign, which sends the clear message that when things are particularly difficult, there’s always someone to talk to. Pick up the phone and let others listen and help.
"Shropshire Mind is also fundraising to support the production of a further 80,000 mats and cards to cover both Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.”
West Mercia Police Chief Inspector, Ed Hancox added: “Emergency services do see an increase in calls from individuals suffering from a mental health crisis over the Christmas and New Year period. We work closely with partners to ensure that individuals get the care and support that they need, recognising that the festive period can be especially difficult for some people.
"This is one way of showing that there is support available, and we are proud to work alongside partners such as Shropshire Mind and Samaritans.”
