Newport Hockey Club has set out on a 'Newport2Naples' challenge, with 16 members aiming to clock up 1,134 miles by running, cycling or walking and tracking their distances.

The youngest to take part is 12-year-old Samuel Cole and the oldest is 80-year-old Glyn Thomas, and it is all for the Severn Hospice.

Ash Williams, 29, is the one who set up the challenge.

He said: "Throughout March, 16 members of Newport Hockey Club (aged 12 to 80) will be challenging themselves to get from Newport to Naples (virtually).

"This is 1,134 miles. Some will be walking, others running and a few will be on the bikes to take on the journey to Naples – and maybe further.

"2020 was pretty rubbish, so we are starting this year as we mean to go on, with a sense of purpose.

Weekly updates

"We will be posting weekly updates to confirm our progress and we will be raising money for Severn Hospice – a wonderful charity who give specialist care and support to families across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin who are living with an incurable illness.

"We will start our fundraising campaign later on in the challenge."

He explained that the challenge was an attempt to keep members connected during lockdown, encourage them to stay fit and active, and support a very worthy cause that is close to the hearts of several members.

Mr Williams also said that the club is friendly and inclusive, and that anyone who is interested in joining the club when restrictions allow should contact the club on social media.
