Patients are being advised to travel to Telford's Princess Royal Hospital while the matter is resolved.

Ambulances are still taking patients to the A&E in Shrewsbury but the trust that runs the hospitals urged everyone else to go directly to Telford.

The trust said the issue was unlikely to be fixed on Monday.

Hayley Flavell, director of nursing at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “We are currently experiencing an issue affecting the drains at our emergency department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. This is, unfortunately, creating a very strong and unpleasant smell.

“Our teams are addressing this issue by carrying out a chemical clean. While the issue is resolved, we are asking any patients who are self-presenting at A&E to attend the Princess Royal Hospital.

“We would like to thank our patients for their understanding.”
