Woman died after 'final option' weight loss surgery went wrong – medics asked for more evidence
Medics will be called on to give further evidence into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a woman following surgery at a Shropshire hospital.
Sarah Arron, aged 47, from Horsehay in Telford, died on June 27, 2022 just days after her "last chance" bariatric surgery to lose weight went wrong in what is normally a relatively low-risk procedure.
An inquest into Mrs Arron's rapid deterioration at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital was told that two surgical procedures days apart went wrong.
On June 21 a bariatric operation by consultant Mr Umesh Parampalli caused a kink which obstructed her bowel.
On June 24, consultant Mr George Kirby, carried out a keyhole surgery to bypass the kink but stitches in the bowel caused a leak of fluids. But that lead to sepsis which she did not recover from.
Mrs Arron's husband David spoke up on behalf of his wife at the inquest at the Coroner's Court, in Shrewsbury on Thursday.
Appearing with seven members of his family, Mr Arron sometimes had to hold back tears as he told coroner John Ellery that he wanted to give his wife a voice in the process and to get to the bottom of what happened.
Mr Arron said: "Sarah saw it as the final option to lose weight. Fatigue and aches and pains from her Multiple Sclerosis restricted her and her appetite was affected by drugs.
"The only option left open to her was surgery. She wanted a better way of life and a successful operation would have given her a golden future."
