Mural tribute planned for Captain Tom Moore in Market Drayton
A Shropshire mural artist plans to paint a tribute to Captain Tom Moore on the side of his town's Royal British Legion club.
Mark Whittle of Market Drayton, a town councillor and painter, said he has agreed with the town's club to paint a mural of the famous veteran fundraiser on an external wall there.
'Captain Tom', as he was popularly known, made headlines after leading a £33 million fundraising campaign for NHS charities by walking around his garden.
He died after contracting coronavirus aged 100 earlier this week.
Now Councillor Whittle, himself a veteran, plans to paint a tribute on the Legion club off Church Street.
He has previously painted murals in the town, including one for the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
He will examine the site this weekend and hopes to begin painting next weekend.
Major Ian Nellins from the club said: "It's very embryonic at this stage. Mark is a bit of an artist.
"We're very sad that he died, but he seemed to bring a light-hearted touch to things and I think that light-hearted touch could be reflected in a tribute to him."
