Shropshire fire staff help out with Covid vaccination drive
Shropshire Fire and Rescue crews have been giving up their spare time to help out at Covid-19 vaccination hubs across the county.
Around 130 staff members have been deployed to the vaccination hubs set up across Shropshire to help set up the sites, assist the vulnerable and use their skills to make the process as efficient as possible.
Staff members, from firefighters to control centre workers, have been working hard during their own spare time to help get the sites up and running.
They have been helping out at Ludlow Racecourse, Telford International Centre and the recently opened Shrewsbury Indoor Bowls Centre.
Adam Matthews, group manager at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said it was great to be able to help out where they could.
"At the moment we are supporting sites with car parking duties and helping those attending," he said.
"We are working across the three sites, Telford International Centre, Ludlow Racecourse and Shrewsbury Indoor Bowls Centre with a range of different activities. From car parks through to helping some of the vulnerable groups.
"We have embedded a manager within the local authority who is helping with the logistics at the vaccine sites and using some of our managerial skills.
"Our staff are doing this in their own time outside of their firefighters duty. There is a range of staff across the whole service involved, from firefighters to administrative staff to people who work in fire control."
Adam said the service was proud to have staff taking part in such an important cause.
"As of yesterday we had approximately 130 members of our staff involved," he added. "At Sundorne we assisted in the design and set up of the site as some staff are on-call personnel so we can utilise their day job skills.
"The public's support has been fantastic for ourselves. Our motto 'ready, willing, able' is very fitting at the moment."
