Covid: More than 260,000 vaccinations delivered in Shropshire

More than a quarter of a million people in the county have now received a Covid vaccine, according to the latest figures.

Telford International Centre has been operating as a mass vaccination centre

NHS data shows that nearly two-thirds of people in the Shropshire Council area have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, while three in five have in the Telford & Wrekin area.

A total of 262,204 vaccinations have now been administered across the county – 175,100 in Shropshire and 87,104 in Telford & Wrekin

The data, which goes up until March 28, shows that 65 per cent of those aged 16 and over in Shropshire have been vaccinated.

In Telford & Wrekin the figure is 61 per cent.

The data comes amid an expected slowdown in the vaccination programme in the county, although the clinical commission groups which run the programme have not confirmed the full details around the impact.

In a statement last month a spokesman said there would be a "temporary change in the opening hours" of the county's vaccination centres.

There had been suggestions that some of the county's largest sites, such as Telford International Centre, Ludlow Racecourse, and Shrewsbury's Indoor Bowling Centre, would close for two weeks.

The details around the plans have not been confirmed with the CCG only saying its appointment system was being adapted around an expected reduction in vaccine supplies for three to four weeks from April 1.

Speaking when the situation was announced David Evans, accountable officer for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups, said the situation would not affect any second dose appointments.

He added they would still be on target to deliver vaccinations to all priority groups by the middle of this month.

He said: "Although we have to reduce the number of vaccines we're giving in our centres over the coming weeks, this is a temporary situation, it is occurring across the country relating to the national supply of vaccine.

"As soon as we’ve got the vaccine supply back we will step the services back up again.

Targets

“Please be assured that our vaccination programme is still on track and in line with government targets we will have offered a first dose vaccine to priority groups 1-9 by mid-April. In addition, all our second dose vaccination appointments will go ahead as planned."

The latest figures show that so far in Shropshire 94 per cent of the over 50s have been vaccinated, around 142,736 people.

In Telford & Wrekin 98 per cent of those over 50 have received a vaccination, with 64,394 people receiving the jab.

Thousands of people aged between 16 and 49 have also received a vaccination – 32,364 in Shropshire and 22,710 in Telford & Wrekin.

In Powys 101,000 vaccinations have been administered – 77,200 first doses and 24,100 second doses.

It means that 92 per cent of people in Priority Groups 1 to 9 have received their first dose, and 29 per cent have received both doses.

Across England, 25.9 million people had received their first dose of a vaccine by March 28, covering 57 per cent of the population aged 16 and over.

That includes 19.6 million people aged 50 and over – 93 per cent of the age group.

The figures also show that 2.9 million people have had a second dose of the jab.
