Pictures From The Past - April 6Welcome to this week's collection of nostalgia photos from the pages of the Shropshire Star.By Toby NealPublished Apr 6, 2018Last updated Apr 6, 2018 CommentsThe crews of two helicopters from RAF Shawbury airlifted in food supplies to farmers and families isolated by massive snowdrifts near Leek in Staffordshire in February 1979. The operation to ferry bread, sugar, coffee and powdered milk into the blizzard-hit areas was a total success despite thick fog. The helicopters, a Wessex and, seen here, a Whirlwind, returned to Shawbury in the afternoon after a three-hour airlift. The team was led by Squadron Leader Mike Tingle and Flight Lieutenant Tim Wood.
