In Shropshire there will be a number of events – from light shows to orchestras, flag flying to fun days – and there will be many ways for people to show their appreciation for all the work the country's Armed Forces do.

David Fairclough, Armed Forces Covenant co-ordinator at Shropshire Council said: “I am delighted that so many groups and organisations within Shropshire will be supporting Armed Forces Day on Saturday. The date gives Shropshire communities the opportunity to thank our Armed Forces, both past and present for their service to our country and I encourage everyone to take part.

"Shropshire Council has been working hard with Shrewsbury Food Festival to deliver a family fun day for Armed Forces Day.

"The event at Shrewsbury’s quarry over the weekend is a fantastic way for local people to come out and thank our Armed Forces, both regulars and reservists for everything they do.

"The event will be attended by local military units who will be promoting what they do and will be showing the public some of the equipment they use. There will be plenty of fun and free activities for families to enjoy including a climbing wall, field kitchen, rifle shooting, a Poppy treasure hunt and musical performances from Shawbury’s Military Wives Choir.

"In addition we’ve worked closely with Andy McKeown, who will be projecting a light show on to St Chad’s Church to honour Shropshire’s military heritage. The light show will be the first event in the UK to celebrate Armed Forces Day and will pay homage to our fine military heritage from the KSLI, to Admiral Benbow and Eric Lock to our modern day personnel at RAF Shawbury, Clive Barracks and Reserve Forces at Copthorne Barracks.

"Shropshire Council will be raising the Armed Forces flag at HQ Shirehall during the week leading up to Armed Forces Day and encourage residents to support the day in whatever way they can, from attending any of the events put on to using the #SaluteOurForces on social media."

Armed Forces Day is a chance for people to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. Across the country, hundreds of events are taking place organised by people, communities and organisations to show their support and get involved.
