Coins may fetch a good price at auction

A collection of coins, jewellery and medals discovered during an antiques valuation event in Tenby last week is expected to sell for more than £20,000 when it goes up for auction in Shrewsbury later this year.

The collection is the latest discovery by Shropshire-based fine art auctioneers Halls on their regular visits to Pembrokeshire.

The coins include 54 Victorian and Elizabethan gold sovereigns, 11 half sovereigns, five George III and one George IV guineas and two half guineas. Amongst a selection of jewellery and watches is a three-stone diamond ring at up to £1,500 and a gold charm bracelet valued at up to £1,200.

The same vendor also consigned a nine carat gold snuffbox valued at around £400 and a selection of medals, including a Waterloo medal, which are now being researched by Halls’ medals and coins specialist Derek Ainsworth.

“The collection belonged to the vendor’s late father who was an antiques dealer and these items had been stored away in the attic,” said Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley, head of Halls’ silver and jewellery department. “We are delighted that she has chosen to sell the collection at Halls.”

The same vendor sold a group of medals awarded to a Welsh First World War hero for £10,000 at Halls in March. The medals included a Military Cross and Albert Medal for conspicuous gallantry, awarded to William Marychurch Morgan from Jeffreyston, near Tenby.
