Forecasters believe that this Bank Holiday weekend could see the thermometer hit the highest temperature of the year so far.

The long spell of high temperatures looks set to continue with the thermometer reaching 22 degrees on Saturday and up to 26 degrees on Sunday. According to the Met Office, patchy rain may move in, but any showers that do materialise will be short-lived.

Grahame Madge from the Met Office said that the forecast for Shropshire was looking 'pretty good' for the weekend.

He added that warm, humid air from France could bring in some showers but temperatures would remain high and the warmest day of the year so far could be seen over the Bank Holiday.

How the next few days look

He said: "Although the sun won't shine all the time, it will feel very nice. There may be some light high cloud and we can expect temperatures of up to 26 degrees.

"There will be high pressure over the UK and that will give us good conditions. There may be areas of showers. The air will turn more humid and we could see the warmest day of the year over the weekend. Temperatures could be as high as 25 degrees on Saturday and 26 degrees on Sunday."

Among a number of events taking place over the weekend is the Shropshire County Show which takes place at the West Mid Showground on Gravel Lane, Shrewsbury, on Saturday.

Attracting thousands of people each year, the show is one of the largest agricultural shows in the county.

Previous years have seen the showground become a muddy quagmire as rain fell on the cattle and sheep sheds, arena and surrounding stalls.

But in recent years the weather has been kind and now organisers are hopeful that this year's attendance could be a record breaker.

Ian Bebbington, director of the West Midland & Shropshire Agricultural Society said: "We are delighted that the weather forecast for show day is good. We have a year to organise and only one day to deliver so we are always praying that the weather will be good."

Over in Market Drayton, the Rock and Bowl music festival will take place on Sunday - when some showers could move in.

Laurence Payne, organiser said: "We'll be cracking on in typical British spirit.

"It doesn't really affect us as everyone just gets on and enjoys themselves regardless. There's no point stressing about the weather as I can't change it."

Other events on this weekend are the Ironbridge World War 2 weekend and the three day cycling Giro event which will take in RAF Shawbury and a trial at the Stiperstones on Bank Holiday Monday.
