The 19-year-old is seriously ill in hospital after being hit by a car at around 4.30pm yesterday on Moorside Road in Yardley Wood.

The car, believed to be a Ford Fiesta, was being followed by police and had failed to stop for officers just minutes before the hit-and-run.

The Fiesta was found in Hornby Grove, Yardley Wood, around three hours later.

No arrests have been made.

Chief Inspector Gareth Morris from West Midlands Police said: “While our focus is on finding out who was driving the car, our thoughts are understandably with the young man who has been seriously injured and his family and friends who are understandably very upset."

As the car which is thought to have hit the cyclist had failed to stop for officers moments before the collision, the matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (formerly the IPCC).

Anyone with information which may help officers should call police immediately on 101.

Alternatively, details on the driver can be passed on anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information may result in a reward.
