The 51st Bridgnorth Walk, now renamed the Bridgnorth Lions Walk after it was taken over by Bridgnorth Lions Club, was held on Bank Holiday Monday.

Walkers could take part in the event for charities of their choice, local or national. This year more than 200 people took part in the walk for Rupert's Revenge, to raise funds for a Bridgnorth youngster with a rare form of cancer.

More than £30,000 was raised by the hundreds of walkers who marches for 22 miles to "stop the croc"- Rupert's nickname for his cancer.

Peter Parker, president of Bridgnorth Lions Club, said: "We are so grateful, the walk was a huge success and looks to raise just over £96,000 for the walkers' charities.

"The 160 juniors that walked had sponsorship in the order £15,000, a true testament to the enthusiasm and caring of our local youngsters."

"Without a doubt it was fantastic. There were 200 walkers for Rupert's Revenge, they have raised a lot of money."

Mr Parker added that when the Lions took the event over it was going to finish.

He said: "It was an event that was going to close. The previous committee couldn't continue, they worked very hard, but there was only a few of them doing it.

"It was a tough decision by the Lions to take it on in the first place but it was just fabulous, it was an unbelievable day.

"The atmosphere was great and the town was packed, all the businesses and pubs and shops were busy. All the kids and families were out supporting the walkers.

"The general feeling among the Lions was that we are so pleased that we made the decision to take it on because it was such a wonderful event and we look forward to organising it for years to come.

"I'm really made up it was a marvellous event.

"We're proud to be doing it as so many people will benefit and that's what the Lions is all about- our motive is to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

"It's a win win win situation."

Walkers also raised more than £6,000 for Cancer Research UK, more than £2,000 for Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, and more national and local charities.
