The German Shepherd police dog, Canto, and his handler were called to a home on Tasley Close in Bridgnorth at about 8.10pm on August 21.

West Mercia Police said there had been concerns that a man at the address may have been trying to harm himself.

Now, the dog has started 'light training' and will be eased into work in the coming weeks.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "The vet is happy with his progress, he's started light training and will be eased back into work over the next couple of weeks."

During the incident, police deployed a taser and the man was detained under the Mental Health Act.

Five-and-a-half year old Canto has since had surgery and he was able to return home with his handler later in the evening.

He has since been on strict rest while he recovers from his injuries.
