Bridgnorth firefighters tackle grass blaze after bonfire spreads
An out-of-control bonfire spread to set 100sq metres of grass ablaze.
Firefighters were called to Bridgnorth Road, Rudge Heath, just after 4.30pm yesterday to tackle the blaze.
A spokesman for Bridgnorth Fire Station said: "At approximately 4.30pm we were alerted to a grass fire.
"It had spread into the field as the owner had got a bonfire which had gone out of control.
"We used a hosereel jet from the major appliance and the high pressure fogging system from the 4x4 to control and extinguish the fire."
The situation was under control by 5pm.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service warned residents to be careful when lighting bonfires.
He said: "Build bonfires well clear of buildings and never use flammable liquids to start the fire.
"Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away. Don't leave bonfires unattended. Don't light bonfires in unsuitable weather conditions."
