Bailiffs called in to collect £4 million in unpaid council tax
Bailiffs have been instructed to collect council tax debts in Shropshire totalling more than £4 million in the past nine months.
Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that Shropshire Council used enforcement agents to recover 3,390 cases of outstanding council tax during the first nine months of the year.
But of the £4,048,840 the bailiffs were instructed to collect, just £235,643 has so far been recovered.
The figures show that bailiffs were called in to deal with 8,316 cases of council-tax debt over the previous two financial years.
The collected just over £1.6 million of £9.15 million owed.
