Much Wenlock prepares for VE Day despite lockdown restrictions
Preparations to celebrate Victory of Europe Day in Much Wenlock are continuing despite restrictions putting a halt to original plans.
Taking place on May 8, VE Day will see residents in the area observe a two-minute silence at 11am to remember the sacrifice and contribution of those who died as a result of the Second World War.
Despite street parties and large gatherings not being possible due to coronavirus restrictions, people are being encouraged to dress their house with bunting, flags and children’s drawings.
Covid-19 coverage:
Much Wenlock town councillor Dan Thomas said: “Residents are hoping for good weather so that they can have a picnic in their gardens at lunchtime, while observing social distancing rules.
“They are also being encouraged to make the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2 at 3pm.”
Shropshire Councillor for the town, David Turner, added: “Later, at 9pm on Friday, there will be a UK-wide broadcast rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. It’s expected that Much Wenlock voices will resound around the streets and across the fields.”
There will also be an online commemoration service to be held at 11am on Sunday, May 10.
